Town and village music

The track players hear more than any other. Make a town theme that's warm on arrival and still easy on the ear after hours of shopping, talking and coming back.

This is an example. Describe your own above and it comes like this too: solo a part, redo one, download them, or edit it in Studio.

Songs made here

Made from these words on this page, each with its stems. Move a level, or press M or S, to hear a part on its own.

How it works

  1. Start from the words in the box. "a warm village theme with fingerpicked acoustic guitar, wooden flute, accordion and light hand percussion". Change any of them, or pick an idea under the box.
  2. Pick the shape. Seamless loop is on, for music that repeats without a click. Pick a tempo, a key and a length, or leave them on Auto.
  3. Get your track with its stems. Play it, download the mix or the stems, or open it in Studio to change the parts.

The track heard most

Players pass through a field once, but they come back to a hub town again and again to shop, rest, talk and pick up quests. Over a whole game that can add up to hours of one theme. Write for the twentieth visit, not the first.

  • Warm, not loud: acoustic guitar, flute, accordion, marimba, soft hand percussion.
  • A melody you can hum: simple and in a major or gentle modal key, without a big climax.
  • Room for voices: town scenes are full of dialogue, so keep the lead instrument in the background.

Turn on Seamless loop and use the full two minutes so the wrap comes round as rarely as possible.

Shops, inns and the square

A town usually needs a few related cues: the square, the shop, the inn, maybe a house interior. Make them all in one key at about the same tempo so walking through a door is a change of room, not a change of game.

Every track comes as five stems (drums, bass, guitar, keys and other). Indoors, play only the keys and other part of the town theme; outside, the full mix. For an inn, make a livelier track in the same key with a fiddle and hand claps.

Towns that change with the story

A town the player knows well is a good place to show that something has happened. Make a festival version with quicker drums, a night version with only the soft parts, or a version after an attack: the same instruments, slower, in a minor key. The RPG music page has more on giving each place its own sound.

Questions

Should every town in the game have its own theme?

Every town the player spends time in, yes. Small stops can share a theme. Give each main town one instrument that's only its own, so players know where they are by ear.

How do I stop a town theme from getting annoying?

Ask for fewer things and a softer lead. Most annoying town themes have a bright, busy melody on top; a gentle one with rests stays pleasant much longer.

What tempo should a town theme have?

Somewhere in the middle, a walking pace, so it doesn't rush the player or drag. Set it by hand so every town in the game sits close to the same pace.

Can I use the music in a commercial game or video?

Yes. Every song is royalty-free on every plan, Free included: use it in commercial games, videos, streams, podcasts and apps.

Can I use it in Claude or ChatGPT?

Yes. Add https://gen.daydream.live/mcp as a custom connector in Claude, or as a custom MCP server in ChatGPT, or add the Daydream app from ChatGPT's directory, and sign in with your Daydream account. Then describe a song in the chat: it plays there with its stems in their own lanes, and if you ask for new drums it makes that part again with the other four as they are. It spends the same credits as this page, 5 a song. How to add it.
